Loved this and I think about this constantly! This was a very relatable read for me as I took a break from drafting a newsletter about the 1997 "Winnie the Pooh for adults" trend I remember sweeping the nation (or maybe just my Louisiana town).
As an aside my daughter begged for a gold foil "9" balloon this year for her birthday — so maybe the balloons are the timeless pieces we've been looking for all along.
“We’re delusional about how timeless we are”<~~ this is what gives me anxiety about “investment pieces.” How do we know what pieces we want to stand the test of time? I remember learning about, ahem, French culture in like 8th grade and learning that less gifts were given at the holidays, but they were of higher quality. I thought this was phenomenally chic and aspirationally, and not that anyone could’ve pried the Delia’s catalogue out of my hands but even back then I remember feeing panicked about choosing which sweater I’d save up for and have forever. And even now I’d never have guessed at point of purchase which sweaters I’d reach for reflexively year after year. We’re delusional, or maybe we can quite see straight and time keeps revealing us to ourselves.
Really enjoyed this hilarious and touching read! I get this way about everything I’ve ever written in my life. I like the reframe that the cringe is a sign of healthy growth.
"I don't dress for women, I don’t dress for men. Lately, I’ve been dressing at Land’s End" is my favorite caption ever.
Love this, and am both deeply disturbed AND proud that I knew that scarf pic was circa 2011 before I even read the caption.
SAME. I thought, "2012? No, no... 2011."
I just loved this post so much and then died when this was on my fyp page.
